There is a word in Spanish, "vivencia" that has no single english equivalent. It is the sum of an experience with a place, its people, sounds, smells, tastes. More than a cultural experience, it is a total experience. It is the way that you felt when you were there. The purpose of this blog is to bring together the experience of the Artibonite River Basin, its people, places, culture and lifestyles for the purpose of sharing to all the diversity of the human and biological experience of this extraordinary place.
I will take you with me on my visits into the watershed, visiting people, places, and learning about their relationship to the water, trees, wildlife, and landscape of the Hispaniola's (Kiskeya) largest and perhaps most important watershed.
I will eventually get around to posting a separate blog in Spanish, Kreyol, and French. For now bear with me as I get started. I hope that these images and stories help to connect the diverse actors from the highlands in Haiti and the Dominican Republic to the lowland rice growing areas in St. Marc and the water that ties them together.
